Interview: Freddie Gibbs Talks “Baby Face Killa,” Jay-Z, and His Album With Madlib | Pigeons & Planes

If you could work with any living artist, who would it be and why?
Jay-Z because he’s the best. I hope he reads this interview, I’ve been shouting him out in all my interviews. I’m trying to get a song with him. But really, that’s the only nikka I wanna work with. I need a test. I want to test myself lyrically. I fukk with Jay-Z, he’s my favorite rapper. Him and Scarface, them the guys I really wanna work with. I just got off the line with Scarface. I wanna make that happen soon. Scarface is always dropping words of wisdom on me. Scarface is the realest motherfukker in the game, man. I ain’t got to talk to no motherfukking assistant, I ain’t got to talk to no motherfukking manager when I talk to Scarface. And this nikkas’s a legend, this man don’t have to talk to me on the phone. But whenever I call this nikka, if he don’t answer, he hit me right back. It don’t even be about rap, it’s just like just to chat, to get advice on the game. I talk to him more than most. Here’s a guy like Bun who I talk to on the regular.

Them motherfukkers right there, them the realest guys in the game. All these rap nikkas, I gotta talk to they assistant and talk to these motherfukkers—I just think that’s bytch shyt. That’s why I don’t fukk with these rap nikkas and I don’t give a fukk who don’t fukk with me. You can line all these nikkas up and knock they ass off a cliff, for all I care. I just think the game’s lacking realness. It’s too much Hollywood shyt in the rap game and I’m experiencing that shyt every fukking day. I’m on my grind and I’m on my paper so I ain’t really tripping, shout out to my real homies that really fukk with me in the game and really a show a nikka love. Especially the guys who helped me put out Baby Face Killa, I appreciate guys like Jadakiss who didn’t have to do a record with me if they didn’t want to.

When I get back, I’m going to hit the Midwest. Just popping up and setting these dates and these tours. I’m trying to push this ESGN shyt and really get it going. I think that I’m in a good position. I got a cult fanbase. I’m not concerned with being on 106 & Park or no shyt like that nikka. I’m focused on making the best music.

Based on what he said in the interview, it sounds like Gibbs ain't even really signed to Jeezy the way we all thought. They just run together.

:leon: from the interview

You’re signed to Jeezy & CTE. How’s your relationship with him and what have you learned?
I mean, man, me and Jeezy partners, you know what I’m saying. I got a partnership with Jeezy. We just work together on certain things. We just got a relationship, that’s how I look at it. That’s pretty much what it is. I got my ESGN records that I put Baby Face Killa out through.

So, it’s deeper than just a signing?
Yeah, it ain’t like this dude signed to this dude, it’s like this dude works with this dude. Me and him work close together. That’s my homie.
