‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Conquers ‘Force Awakens’ With Record $250M Opening; Posts Record $83M Saturday
Disney has yet to call it, however, rivals are showing Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War with an opening between $248M-$250M, which makes it the highest domestic opening of all-time, smoking Disney’s own Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.96M). Again, Disney has not called this, however, confidence is quite high among the distribution community that this was a banner weekend.
Today, Infinity War scored the record for the best Saturday ever with $82M, which is 18% ahead of the previous Saturday record owned by Universal’s Jurassic World ($69.6M, June 13, 2015). Today marked a wonderful -23% ease from Friday’s $106.7M (including $39M Thursday previews). Back those previews out of Friday ($67.7M) and today was +21% over yesterday for the Disney-Marvel title.
In studio-reported Sunday figures, Bleecker Street’s Disobedience drew $241K at five New York and Los Angeles theaters for a $48K per theater, which ranks as the fourth best opening average for this year, after Isle of Dogs ($60K), Avengers: Infinity War (est. $55K), and Black Panther ($50K); it’s the second best 2018 opening average for a non-major studio title.
