In Living Color, 25 Years Later: Pilot Screening and Panel with the OGs to be Featured at 2019 Tribeca Film Festival

Full disclosure: I was about six years old when In Living Color premiered. I may or may not have had any business watching the program that would become my first introduction to sketch comedy with black talent at the lead.
Tiny Tonja immediately fell in love with the show and molded her own blossoming comedic skills by reenacting Homey D. Clown for her friends. She would also fall in love with dancing in her bedroom in a mock audition for The Fly Girls. Perhaps she was a bit young to join that squad. Perhaps.
Spring is arriving, so that means Manhattan will soon be buzzing with independent filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.
The Tribeca’s TV program, in particular, announced something pretty exciting to satisfy our nostalgic palate: A whole 25 years after its series finale, Tribeca TV will be taking a look back at In Living Color, along with some of the original cast’s heavy hitters.
Per Tribeca Film Festival’s press release:
In Living Color - A look at the show 25 years after its finale with a screening of the pilot and reunion/conversation with creator Keenan Ivory Wayans and Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans, Tommy Davidson, Rosie Perez, and David Alan Grier.
Wow, 25 years, y’all. The series finale aired May 19, 1994. It doesn’t even seem like the series was as short-lived as it was— at least it didn’t seem that way back then. Maybe kid time hits differently. Or maybe the content was so rich, it felt like we received the bounty.
Tribeca will also screen the New York premiere of Showtime’s Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men.
Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men (Showtime) - about one of the most influential hip-hop groups of all time will screen at the Beacon Theatre with all living members in attendance.
Tribeca’s slate is looking fruitful, in general, having recently announced its opening night film, Apollo, an HBO documentary.
Helmed by Academy and Emmy Award-winning director Roger Ross Williams, The Apollo chronicles the unique history and contemporary legacy of the Apollo Theater. The feature-length documentary includes archival footage, music, comedy and dance performances, and behind-the-scenes verité with the team that makes the theater run and also features interviews with Patti LaBelle, Pharrell Williams, Smokey Robinson, Jamie Foxx, and more.
“When some of the most cinematic storytelling continues to happen on screens of all sizes and shapes, we were particularly inspired this year by the scope, innovation, and accomplishment of the so-called ‘small’ screen,” noted Cara Cusumano, Festival Director of the Tribeca Film Festival. “It’s a privilege to showcase these diverse works with a robust program that speaks to the limitless potential of the episodic form.”
The 18th Tribeca Film Festival will take place April 24 - May 5.
