The Second Noble Truth: The Truth the Causes of Suffering - ZENGUIDE.COM

Never forget reading "Siddhartha" in high school and him saying something like "the cause of suffering is want"............................I was like damn that's harsh.........you really ready to live that "scarce"/ascetic lifestyle??......I'm not uber big on materialism, but you better do your research first...

the best coast
try quitting your job, living in the woods, and thinking about the sound of one hand clapping for a week. get back to us on how that goes.

what exactly do Monks do?

and what do they eat?

they live a very, very, very difficult life, at least outside of the US. they work a lot, often teaching, building something, farming/gardening, or they're begging.

they're fed communally (some monks cook) or they beg for food, but they do it in places that expect this, and they're taken care of, not like homeless people here. although they aren't looking for good meals, most don't eat meat unless that's all they're offered (people don't offer meat).

the monks in my neighborhood play basketball and are driving school teachers :manny:

but it's still a difficult life. you have almost no personal liberty unless you're the abbot/banthi/whatever the local word is.

in some places it's like college (quite literally, because it's the best place to study). take tibet - a lot of dudes, like 60% or something, are monks at some point. it's not seen as taboo to leave the monastery, although many stay as well.
