It has alternatives to the major social media sites.

Peertube(alternative to youtube)

Pixelfed(alternative to instagram)

Yall already know about mastodon and bluesky, but you might not know you can interact with mastodon posters on blue sky and vice versa

Lemmy(alternative to reddit)

And discord has basically become an intermediary for people on message boards.

People escaped to the internet to avoid corporate ownership of seemingly every space. They wanted a place where they could interact anonymously with one another and talk about things they couldn't in person.

Corporate just moved into, and dominated the internet, funneling most traffic into sites owned by Google or meta, or running on Amazon's cloud computing service(AWS).

I think that people are getting sick of these irritating, right wing tech ceos and are looking to get away from basically being censored unless they're posting nazi shyt. In the future I think the most successful sites will be crowdfunded. The users, giving something like 2 dollars a month will be able to keep the sites going. Similar to how youtube creators are millionaires because of a mix of patreon subscriptions and advertising revenue. When the site is collectively owned, the people running it are accountable to its users, not millionaires who buy hundreds of thousands worth of stock and sit on the board.
