I've personally used them all my life. It sounds crazy if you have never used them but it's really not as bad as it seems.....I know it's not safe though.

Not recommended. As stated before you can puncture your ear drum and/or push wax further into your ear making the problem worse. There are quite a few remedies such as hydrogen peroxide, Debrox or a mixture of vinegar and water solution use those regularly and you shouldn't have a problem.
