:francis::francis: You have a breh from 1968 in the Top 4.

Shouldn't this record be broken already, since postal workers didn't have the same level of training, diet and evolution like the modern athlete of today ?

The point is that the baseline has come up.

Obviously there were some amazing athletes then and they were able to stand out more cause they were going up against postal workers and janitors :mjlol:

Has nothing to do worth evolution.

The average person generally has a better life with better nutrition and more time to devote to being an athlete. People come out the womb and do nothing but be an athlete for the rest of their lives. In the past being an athlete was more like a side job for most people. You obviously had some standouts, but everyone else literally were janitors and substitute teachers.

:mjlol:

It's more intricate than just running and jumping. And not talking PEDS.

Weather track stadium conditions. Let alone the technical aspects of the event before you've even have taken off.

All those pit records are long standing. Over 26 years since the last one was broken.

Why not make a thread about the women's 100-800m records not being broken since the 80's.

Also the IAAF have been thinking about clearing all world records prior to 2005 a few years back.

IAAF rule proposes wiping away world records set before 2005

:heh: you're looking at that graphic wrong. It's just a comparison chart.
That dude from 1968 has the number 2 jump of all time and that is the Olympic record. STILL.

This could be part of it.

Maybe in America. But elsewhere? Or are we only using the sporting world according to America?

When we're probably in the greatest era of strong fields from top to bottom. Especially in the sprinting events. Minus Noah Lyles he's a cheat code.

I would liken it to the landscape of boxing.

50 years ago, the talent at the heavyweight division was quite high. Are boxers worse now? Possibly. Because a 6'3 200 pound athlete is probably playing something else.

So could that shift help to explain why long jumpers aren't as good as they used to be? Maybe.

Or maybe athletes today are just as fast and strong as those of the past...and the incremental improvements could all be on account of advances in technology and science.

I don't know. I think it is complex.

Has the baseline gone up? Just like sub ten second times in the 100 wasn’t a thing until the last 15 years. Now everyone in a major competition final runs under 10 seconds.

Ben Johnson ran 9.79 on the juice in 1988.

Even 33 years later, I am not sure many sprinters today could run 9.79 with steroids. The number of guys who could beat that number is probably less than 5.

So again, I think it is complex.

Yes. Last 3 seasons best mark been around 8.60-69. Prior 3 season to that best mark was 8.50-59.

Apart from 2010 and the year Rutherford won 8.50m + has been the best standard mark.
