Coming from a time where a grown ass man would be called "boy" by white folk and he had to grin like a fool and call that same man "sir". But now you'd go to a restaurant and someone would greet you like "good evening sir" or you go to the store and they'd be like "can I help you find something ma'am?"

Explain in more detail. I imagine that they would be really taking in the fact that after all that struggle, after all that disrespect that they've been put through, even something as simple as a "yes sir" would really make them feel a little amazed on the inside.

For some of these black folk they had lived 30+ years being treated like they existed only to serve the white man and to have someone actually treat them with respect, as if they're a somebody I imagine they feel a mixture of quiet tearful joy over the fact that they'd live to see the day that someone who would be overtly disrespectful would at least try to hide their contempt under a veneer of kindness but also sadness over the fact that some people they knew died before they ever were treated like they belonged in the country they were born in.

They probably are indeed happy they lived to see the day that they were treated as a fellow human being, but I don't think they have any resentment towards the white race. Forgive me if I'm wrong but I don't think there are any white people alive today who had anything to do with slavery.
