To be honest, I don't talk to white people much about politics but I did yesterday. In my opinion, their view of America was extrememly outdated. These were young folks too, in their 20s.
They accused Obama (not even in a tea bagger way) of not being American enough in comparison to Mitt Romney. Though that sounds racist, I am not calling them racist for this at all.
In their view a true "American" is exuberantly proud, bleeds America through their veins and has a solid grasp of national history that can be regurgitated on que.
This puzzled me because last time I checked, America was a capitalist nation where productivity comes first and patriotism is an option. Of course you cannot threaten national security but as long as you are a law abiding citizen and a productive member of society, that is about as "patriotic" as you can get.
I think the individuals that I spoke with view America as it was in its inception. No diversity. Just a few ethnicities that had way more in common than they had in contrast who were allowed to develop todays America based on their cultures from back home.
They are acting as if America has some rich deep ethnicity that someone outside of that bloodline like Obama is supposed to accept just because he is a citizen.
In my opinion, people's right to be non patriotic and to be nothing more or less than an individual is what made modern America great.
There is a huge sect of the country that never will accept the fact that what DRIVES America is diversity and those who are transnational or aspire to be that way. The proud to be an American era is over and only had a resurgence because of 9-11. Today it is outdated garbage that will divide this country and drive once sane men into terrorists
