i have this cousin that is 14 and he is already 6'4

if he puts in effort he def can get a full ride and become either an nba prospect or play overseas

he is in love with basketball but as of right now his diet and workout habits are trash

that shyt is expect cause he a kid..

i see the potential so i been working out with him for the month of august

today was the first day so i made him do my usual routine with lighter weights

couple questions.

1. i know its probably not best for him to weight lift this early. would it be cool if he did light shyt?
2. any athletes know workouts that would be beneficial
3. any advice or criticism

right now im tryna get him to think like a guard

most likely the nikka gonna be like 6'9 or 6'10 but i dont want that macklemore syndrome to hit him

we tryna train a star here son

First and foremost, clean up the diet. Get him USED to eating healthy and it will become a habit.

And if he's gonna be 6'10", don't let him think he's a guard. Stick his ass on the block on school him on FOOTWORK above all else. For big men, it's easier to move/grow from inside-out imo

Well, he's 6'4 and it's unknown whether he is going to grow more or not. Don't corner him into a position or have preconceived notions that he'll do better at a certain position than another. He's 14, he still needs to get the basics down regardless of what position would suit him best.

As for weight lifting, he's beyond his first growth spurt so weight lifting can benefit him. He can start pumping iron now, but at a beginner level. The main point is to gain strength, not mass. He should start out with light weights. Anyone who lifts, adult or teen, needs to start out low. And increase weight as his capability allows. He's not looking to become the next Mr. Universe. He doesn't need to bench 300 lbs. He doesn't need to squat 400 lbs. He can have short-term and long-term goals. Also, get him into running. Basketball is a more of an aerobic sport than football. Cross-training, getting involved in other sports like track would benefit him.

As for his eating habits, he needs to drop the junk food and snacks. I don't think he sees the negative effects of that because he's not playing at an elite level. It's a sad reality check when an opposing team has the next "LeBron" running up and down the court for 40+ minutes and he looks flabby and sick, i.e. he's a ghost in the eyes of NCAA and NBA scouts.

Put that nikka on a track and make him do agility and sprint drills all day, that should be yall workout unless your on the court. Find all his weakness write them down and turn them to strengths and dont assume hell be 6'10 thats dumb as fukk bro

And the month of august is 7 days in its gonna take alot of time to get him that nice so u have to be more dedicated then he is, good luck

fukk all that weightlifting shyt, have his ass shooting 1000 three pointers per day or more.

No matter how garbage your defense is or if you can't rebound and your handle is trash and you don't know how to pass, if you're a knockdown shooter there's a place for you in the NBA.

He's 14, cut him some slack on the diet but teach him about good food. Good carbs, lean protein etc.

Read the Vertical Jump Bible. It goes into great depth on plyometrics, squatting for better vertical, basics of strength training, etc. http://msuathletics.ru/books/bible/vert_jump_bible.pdf

Stay far far away from bodybuilding/aesthetic routines. He is only 14 though, teaching him how to eat like an athlete, while working on his conditioning (sprinting, work capacity, general cardio) and flexibility (stretching his hips, hamstrings, and youtube yogaforathletes) will go a long way. If y'all are serious about it, investing in a prowler sled would be a great idea.

Btw, I train strongman/power lifting and have tons of info that worked for me on how to improve jumping/40 times/athleticism if you have any other questions.

Besides the normal drills that are designed to improve skills and increase co-ordination and conditioning( he should have had exposure to this from the age of 7-9), try advanced plyometrics + calisthenics training (google for guides) to help improve psychomotor skills - these are what usually separates the top prospects from normal kids that can just ball out of control.
