George Wallace was endorsed by the NAACP the first time he ran for Governor. He lost in the Democratic primary to John Malcolm Patterson, who was endorsed by the KKK. He was known as one of the most liberal judges in the Alabama circuit court (liberal for Alabama in the 50's).

That was before he become the face of segregation and resistance to civil rights in the 60's.
