I'm just a casual UFC fan and only follow from time to time.
I heard a couple-few weeks ago about the Jon Jones/Courmier fight and I figured it was coming up soon, but didnt know exactly when.
So Monday when they had the scuffle at the press conf., I figured the fight was this weekend, and this was a great way to get the on-the fence, last minute & casual fans to order the PPV, the ESPN anchors said the same Then Tues & Wed I see both Jones and Courmier on different ESPN shows and FS1 talking about the fight, shooting on each other, etc. Now I'm definitely under the impression it's gonna be this Saturday and these guys are selling it hard.
But then at the end of one of the interviews, the anchor said the fight was SEVEN weeks from now.
I'm like 7 weeks? What kinda strategy is this? They expect people(outside of the hardcore fans) to remember this and care enough 7 weeks from now to drop $50 on a ppv? Even if the scuffle wasn't planned, why have them going on a media blitz this far away from the fight? Why not wait until a couple weeks before to start the mass media rounds?
7 weeks from now we will be knee deep into the college football and NFL season and won't be thinking about this scuffle that happened almost 2 months prior.
