Man decapitates his wife, kills daughter and hangs himself | Daily Mail Online

Police in New York City are investigating a grisly double-murder suicide in which they say a man decapitated his wife, slit the throat of their five-year-old daughter and then took his own life by hanging Wednesday night, just hours after a scheduled divorce hearing.

According to the NYPD, at around 9.18pm officers responded to a 911 call requesting a welfare check inside an apartment at 151 West 121st Street in the Harlem section of Manhattan.

Upon entering the unit, officers found a 46-year-old man, his 42-year-old wife and their five-year-old daughter dead inside.

It is unclear at this time how long the family had been dead before their bodies were discovered.

DailyMail.com can now identify the married couple as Yonathan Tedla and Jennifer Schlecht.

Tedla was discovered in a bedroom, his wife in the bathroom, and their child in another bedroom, according to a press release from the police. The mother and daughter both had neck trauma.

The New York Daily News reported, citing unnamed sources, that Schlecht was found decapitated, with her severed head resting in her lap.

Her daughter suffered a cut so deep to her neck that she was partially beheaded.

The five-year-old's father was found hanging from a rope tied to a bedroom door.

Tedla and Schlecht were reportedly going through divorce proceedings and were due in court for a hearing just hours before the gruesome slayings.

Schlecht's brother contacted the authorities that evening, asking to check on his sister after failing to reach her by phone.

Neighbors described Tedla as a good and kind man who adored his wife and daughter.

The Daily News reported that in 2016, Schlecht got a temporary restraining order against her husband because he was threatening her.

A crumbling marriage ended in a bloodbath when a deranged Harlem man decapitated his wife, slit the throat of their 5-year-old daughter and then hanged himself inside the family’s once-happy home, police sources said Thursday.

Cops responding to a 911 call from the wife’s worried brother forced their way inside the family’s four-story brownstone Wednesday night only to discover a gore-spattered scene of unimaginable horror, the sources said.

Their young daughter was discovered in her bedroom with a gash so deep to her throat she was partially decapitated, sources said. Her 46-year-old father, Yonathan Tedla, was hanging nearby from a rope tied to her bedroom door, taking his own life after carving up his loved ones, cops said.

The 42-year-old slain woman’s father, Kenneth Schlecht, told the Daily News the couple’s marital strife began about five years ago after the birth of their child. Tedla, who was originally from Ethiopia, had recently threatened his wife if she went to court to dissolve their marriage.

“The last time we talked to our daughter was on Sunday,” recalled the 75-year-old dad. “She was in tears, said her husband had indicated that if she served him with divorce papers he would ruin her or take them all out. Which was apparently what he did.”

His desperate daughter went to file for an order of protection Tuesday only to find courts closed for election day, he said. She was determined to go the next day, the day of the killings. She never made it, according to a courts spokesman.

Stunned neighbors described the couple as outwardly happy, with neither husband nor wife showing any signs of marital strife during their years inside the building.

“I’m still asking God why,” said Timothy Harris, 37, who often saw the family patriarch jogging. “When you saw them, they were a happy couple. Funny dude, always smiling, always had his daughter up on his shoulders. They were a beautiful couple. I still don’t understand what happened.”

“He’s a very, very nice guy," shocked neighbor Patricia Brodin, 40, said of Tedla. “I used to see him all the time taking his daughter to school. Why did he snap like this?

“Everybody knows him on this block,” she continued. "He was a really good guy. I’m really stunned. I don’t know what to say. He always minded his business . . . He was a non-violent guy.”

In 2016, Schlecht was granted a temporary restraining order against her husband because he was threatening and harassing her, sources said. But cops were never called to the home for domestic disturbances. And a 2016 family court case against her husband was ultimately dismissed when Schlecht stopped pursuing it, a spokesman for the courts said Thursday.

Worried father Kenneth Schlecht waited in vain Wednesday for a text or a call from his daughter about her crumbling marriage and her unhinged husband.

When the phone finally rang around 2 a.m. Thursday, the news was devastating: 42-year-old Jennifer and their 5-year-old granddaughter were both dead, brutally butchered by their daughter’s husband inside their Harlem brownstone apartment. Spouse Yonathan Tedla then committed suicide inside the little girl’s room.

“The last time we talked to our daughter was on Sunday. She was in tears,” Schlecht told the Daily News. “She said her husband had indicated that if she served him with divorce papers he would ruin her or take them all out. Which was apparently what he did."

Schletch said his daughter met husband-to-be Tedla while she was attending graduate school at Columbia University, where he was a freelancer working in IT services. She arrived at the Ivy League school around 9/11, earning a masters degree in social work and public health.

Tedla came to the U.S. from Ethiopia, although he had some relatives in New York City, according to his father-in-law. Jennifer was a highly-regarded figure in the fields of international relief and development, and a voice for family planning in crisis settings around the world — spending time in Kenya and Tanzania, among other places.

The marriage appeared to be a happy one — until the couple welcomed their daughter five years ago, Kenneth Schlecht said.

“His behavior toward her changed pretty dramatically when they had a child,” the devastated dad said. A few years later, Jennifer told the family she was going to get an order of protection from her husband, he added.

But Jennifer “didn’t want to pull her husband away from the child,” and the couple stayed together even as the relationship continued to sour, Schlecht said.

After her tear-filled phone call on Sunday, Jennifer told her parents and siblings she was headed to family court Tuesday to get an order of protection, he said. But courts were closed for Election Day.

The family believes Jennifer intended to return Wednesday — but never heard from her. A court spokesman told The News she didn’t arrive in court.

“My wife expected to hear something by 5 p.m.,” the 74-year-old father said. "By about 9 p.m., when we didn’t hear anything, we called 911 and asked for a wellness check. And about 2 a.m., we heard they found three bodies.
