Originally announced in May 2021 under the title of "Immigrant," the limited series will consist of eight episodes and is executive produced by Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon. The series is written and executive produced by Robert Siegel, who wrote Hulu's other limited series Pam & Tommy starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan. Per the synopsis: "A sprawling true-crime saga, Welcome to Chippendales tells the outrageous story of Somen 'Steve' Banerjee, an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of the world’s greatest male-stripping empire -- and let nothing stand in his way in the process."
Banerjee was born in Bombay and became a businessman in America, taking part in a series of failed business ventures before he purchased a nightclub in Los Angeles. After partnering with Nick De Noia and creating was is now known as Chippendales in 1979, Banerjee's story took off in a darker direction as he became involved in plots to kill De Noia, as well as other dancers. He would plead guilty to attempted arson, racketeering and murder for hire and was found dead in his cell in 1994.
