higher pay, better education requirements. Thats all you can do really.

This, but I'd go a little further.

The way things tend to work, in some police departments cops get paid a commission for every arrest they make. In other departments, making an arrest near the end of his/her shift can result in the officer getting OT pay. And even in departments where this isn't the case, there's political pressure on each command to "make numbers" each month, which basically means making enough arrests to justify the command's existence to the politicians that set the budget.

What this means is that cops often have incentives to arrest a certain number of people whether it's really necessary or not. The unnecessary drug laws on the books don't help.

So I guess need to figure out a way to avoid incentivizing officers to arrest people, though I'm at a loss on exactly how to do that. Legalizing marijuana and having more reasonable drug laws would help to.

You may not be able to make cops less racist/crooked, but you can at least not give them incentives to arrest people excessively.

I had the dude who was responsible for trying to stop police corruption(on the national level) as a Justice and Administration professor. Felt sorry for dude cuz he couldn't get shyt done, no one would listen to him and they don't want to raise pay or education requirements because that would mean less officers.

the best coast
educational requirements

rigorous certification to be able to have a gun (give others tasers)

a legitimate place where people can complain about the police (not the police department itself :aicmon:)

stricter punishments for officers infringing on peoples rights. even the small stuff.

better policy for using firearms. maybe shooting someone 1 time in the leg or arm? :leon: cops out here just emptying clips in people just for running at em or running away :what:

and the police need to stop investigating their own crimes. if a cop shoots a guy, and another one of his buddies is investigating it, he won't be held accountable for anything. we need a third party group that comes in and does that.

There should be an entity that polices the police. Also, make them as accountable for any crime as a civilian. If a police officer shoots a civilian without due cause, he should go down for murder like everyone else.

Yes but they go into action after the fact, we need to take preventative measures and really the only real way to police the police are an educated, armed, independent citizen run militia that operates under the same laws and principles. Almost like a checks and balances system.

The only way to stop cops from being azzholes/racists etc... is to remove the need for the police. Police are only needed in a society when that society has a separation of those who have and those who have not...

other then that

checks and balances but not from other cops from the public...if someone could figure a good way to do that I think that would decrease a lot of the racial profiling etc...

More interaction on the street level. Not stop and frisk stuff, but more Andy Griffith, friendly interaction with the communities they police.
If the officers do not have a stake in an area they work in, they can't really give a shyt about how well the people in that area thrive.
More interaction, more trust on both sides, fewer petty arrests, less harassment, more involvement from the community. It all rolls together.

Strip Powers from the Police Unions or reform them

The MOST important:

Punish cops that break the law MORE harshly than a regular citizen. Charge any police officers using their power to violate the Constitution with treason. Make laws that charge police officers as accomplices if they don't report criminal police behavior.
