I mean I'm down to ride with either version (where do you think my name comes from?) but his changing stance on certain things was a reflection of progress being made on the ground. A good leader adapts.
Early civil rights era I could the potential of self-segregation. Late civil rights era I could see a need to integrate without assimilating and building up a community.
All of this was before the Internet and cheap readily available travel.
So taking those things into mind, I don't ascribe to any segregationist philosophy because the world has gotten smaller and there are very few places to withdraw to to avoid people of any color.
It's just less feasible now and will be even less so in the future.

I've always been partial to this strategy. We love in the belly of the beast on a modern day Babylon. The gains we've fought for here to tear it down have translated into the greatest era of freedom for people in history. If we aren't here fighting this fight who will?
Our struggle is tough because we have the strength to overcome it.
