I practice piano as much as possible and learn new chords on youtube. That's helped me out a lot when I sit down to make a beat. There's a lot of simple chords that you can learn without being good on the piano that can get you a long way.

Its really a matter of talent. Some people have ears for melodies, others don't. Learning some chords is a real good way of helping you though... and listen to a lot of music, different genres. Study the game, emulate and it make it your own sound.

take some basic music classes (music theory 101) at your local college it should teach you what you need
