If you have a cardiovascular, weight loss or body composition goal keep in mind your body eventually adapts to levels so to @jadillac point you get use to it and it has less impact.
When I had a gym membership I did do the elliptical.Not trying to be a jerk but....
Unless you have a physical ailment, why not just get on a elliptical and double your walking speed? Walking alone may not do much for you unless your diet is under control.
There's ppl in places like NYC & other places who walk everywhere/everyday and are still overweight.
