‎This story happened a few years ago, but it was just brought to my attention and I found it interesting because it made me think, so I decided to post it on here to see what y'all thought about it.

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace, and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping, and continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste, and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

Now, if you don't know about me; McSpacey the first thing you need to do is: ask about me nikka! Secondly you have to understand: I post exclusive shyt, but I don't fukk with no gossip. It's nothing McSpacey hates more than a nikka that gossips like a bytch! So of course I got the actual footage of this shyt happening for my coli-fam to check out below...

Joshua Bell "Stop and Hear the Music" by the Washington Post - YouTube
the truth is, GOOD music aint GOOD music to everyone. everyone isnt in love with classical music. sure they better respect its complexity . but thats where it ends for some.

now put Drake right there next to lil weezy. and i bet you people would stop and listen. why? because thats POPular. among the masses.

a popular artist could play their music and people would stop like crazy.

if it was a no namer with a crazy beat and a crazy mcee / singer. more people would've stopped then they did for the guy playing classical music. it doesnt matter WHO HE IS. he's no one to someone who isnt in the know of classical music.

whats a lNas to someone who hates rap or never listens to it. they may know of this guy due to his popularity but thats about it. i wouldnt expect some 65 year old white guy to stop and give Nas change and appreciate his greatness.

That's very true and I agree 100%. I guess the real question here though is: how low is the standards when it comes to quality in the entertainment industry? I understand that people may not be a fan of a particular style or genre, but are we living in a time where quality is totally dismissed and smoke and mirrors no matter how bad is celebrated? I'm not a fan of classical music, but dude is clearly playing at a high level, and no one gives zero fukks which is sad. It seems like there's no standard for musicians nowadays. It's always been artist who had gimmicks, but their music was amazing (i.e. MJ, Prince, etc.) now it just seems like all a artist needs is a gimmick and they're successful while when a talented artist catches the attention of a large group of people it's almost as if they're shunned because they're so talented which is crazy to me!

Lol.. The lady at the end recognized him though.

well you're talking about something different.

remember what i said. i said two things. if a popular artist would've been out there even with a bag over their heads. playing their music live. people would stop. why? because its POPular. more people know whats being played even if they are just passing by and its somewhat unconscious. most people are not going to pass by that classic player and know off bat "oh i know that song, or oh that sounds like so and so's song."
not gonna happen.
and thats not about standards of quality. thats about I like music A, you like music B, very few people know and reallllly like classical music enough to call out someone's music, who's playing bach, beethoven. which piece. in what variation, etc, etc. thats music geek boy stuff. most people are not like that and dont admire that genre unlesssss its played as background music when you walk around. you wont mind it. because its soothing. or played as soundtrack music in a movie. because this is what you've grown up listening to your entire life and classical music sets the tone for horrow, suspense, happiness, etc.

but again. if someone was playing something from a more popular genre. i'm saying IF me, mr no name rapbeats started playing my own music and it was great alternative, or great hiphop, or something inbetween. People would stop and give up the change more so then they would for mr classical.

thats not to say that I'm not a quality artist. it just means i'm playing the type of music the masses in this era love to hear.

if he played that same tune when classical music was at the top of the music genre food chain. more people would've stopped.

what is beauty is at the heart of the question. This is not an indictment of people's indifference to art, it's a expose on their lack of appreciation or recognition of classical music as art.

You get me a man painting a picture of some dogs playing poker with his feet and you'll get a crowd, that does not make it art...well tasteful art at least.

it's not even just the type of the music the guy was playing, it the venue and context of where he was at. most people aren't gonna give a shyt about some busker playing music (no matter how great) when it's rush hour and they're just trying to get to work.

i don't really think it's a comment on the low standards of music or anything.

thats not true.

i promise you. Put Kanye in there with a bag over his head so you cant tell its him. and make him have a band playing a new song thats very popular. I Guarantee you people would stop. a lot more then stopped for mr classical. EVEN in rush hour.

people like what they like. its that simple. and most people are not INTO classical music. even if they dont necessarily dislike it.

mustve been a humbling experience

to realize that within your comfortable bubble you're a king, but amongst the general population you're nothing but a peasant

has to put life into perspective really....life, your talent and the positive feedback of your bubble

does the musician now look upon lesser known artist who are forced to play in venues such as this with a newfound respect? or does he just shrug it off and continue to play his $100 a seat shows?

yeah, it is true. of course more people would stop if someone played a hit song from a popular genre but the for the most part, people would just keep on going where they need to go.
