How much does overtraining affect an athlete's fight game?

I ask because I keep hearing about JDS being mindful of overtraining and everyone swears up and down that he'll win the next one because of this. I don't really think this will happen because JDS had no answers for Cain early on in the fight when he did have energy. But, my point is, the issue is whether JDS's alleged overtraining was the deciding factor in their last fight.

JDS starting believing his own bs which is common amoung Brazilian fighters, he even said he could beat the Klits Bros in Boxing. I don't think it had anything to do with it or this fight. If a fighter over does it you can tell

Basically, you need to recover from the hard months of intense training, without doing so, your body won't respond properly. It happens, usually when guys are training too intensely too close to the actual bout/contest, your body needs to wind down for like a week. Sounds extreme, but these aren't normal people, they're professional athletes at the peak of human performance. Whether it happened to JDS or not we don't really know, it's an often used excuse for athletes, sometimes it's real other times it's BS.

We'll just have to see.

I will say this though......if a fighter is over training, blame goes on the coach, it's his job to prepare the fighter properly (unless of course you're dealing with a Chavez Jr. type of character)

Prior to his last fight against Gilbert Melendez, Josh Thomson was apparently someone who trained like a beast, would go full out every day no matter if he had a fight scheduled or not as well being constantly dehydrated while training, it was just how he learned to do things coming from a wrestling background. He started using a nutritionist and has adjusted his training schedule to be less rigorous and the results have seemed great so far

I'll try to find the article that talks about it but it may have been a podcast I heard it on

I guess so. It just seems that a guy that was champion at one point wouldn't let himself screw up like this.

That's what I was thinking. He didn't have answer's for Cain's strategy when he still had the energy to work something against him. I'm wondering if he's going to get reckless again against Cain, thinking that he had the right strategy the first time, and suffer the same fate. Actually, I think JDS is going to get submitted, but that's just me.

A lot. It also has a lot to do with peaking at the right time. Hendo is a pretty famous guy who completely changed how he trained later in life and did better than ever before. Same with Randy. The both of them trained much much less than when they were young. Hendo goes EXTREMELY light on training compared to most guys (when he was a beast in SF)

GSP (who most people know as a guy that does nothing but train) actually doesn't train that much. He just trains correctly. He only trains about an hour a day most of the time leading up to camp. He just picks the correct way to do it.

who is everyone? cain is the favorite where it matters. i thought the deciding factor was juniors lack of respect for cains power, he seemed too focused on defending the takedown. as far as not having an answer for cains strategy, he got blasted with a huge shot early on that probably should have ended the fight, i was impressed he made it through.

I thought Cain was going to go for the submission, but apparently he passed up those opportunities to just pound the hell out of JDS.

I don't believe the problem is over training alone, it's the under eating from having to make weight combined with too much training imo.

Yeah, but JDS is one of the leaner, more mobile heavyweights that doesn't have problem meeting that limit.

:lupe: How much do you think it affected JDS?

A lot. From the original article "They also realized that his creatine kinase was way too high. The average level for an adult male is 300, Dos Santos’ level was around 1400 after his fight. He was pushing his body over the limit and was not getting enough rest to let his body heal."

http://www.medicalhealthtests.com/a...e-significance-of-a-slightly-elevated-cr.html

"Creatine kinase is an enzyme that is present in all the muscles of the body and is a catalyst in the energy conversion process."

" Elevated levels of the enzyme, or any levels of it, is usually the first test for cardiac problems.

This happens especially if they are corroborated with some other tests like the alanine transaminase test, which is actually a liver function test as well. Since this is a crucial enzyme in the energy conversion process, if it is present in the blood, where it shouldn't be, it is a sign of the breakdown of muscle or dystrophy."

This article goes on to list the possible reasons of having a high CK level, one of which is a fatal heart attack.

Dude almost worked himself to death.
