Too many free beats from producers with skill but no business acumen out there; the market is over-saturated with undervalued material. Why would an MC pay money for something they can get for free? It sucks but that's the way it is.
For Artist Placements:
- I think the best way to come up is become the house producer for an artist 40/Drake, Lex/Waka, Zey/Gucci, etc. Build a rapport with a rapper you think can be eventually marketed and meshes well with your style of beat. You'll be doing this for free until if/when the MC starts getting paid. That said, try and come up with as formal of an agreement as possible prior to the dough.
- Send beats to A&Rs or directly to rappers via twitter/e-mail etc. or have a CD/thumb drive with all your music and vitals on there and go to events/shows with these types of individuals.
Keep in mind, also: as mentioned above, there are PLENTY of other ways to get your music placed: TV Shows, Commercials, Video Games, Movies, Phone Apps, Websites, Films - the list goes on. However, it's more difficult to place sampled tracks in this medium because cats ain't trying to pay sampling fees/deal with the headaches associated with clearing a sample.
The internet is your motherf*cking friend; don't ask other producer-folk for contact hook ups - afterall, you're their competition. Google that sh*t and look for Music Directors, Music Coordinators, and/or Entertainment Lawyers/Managers on your own. Go to Producer Showcases, Industry Events where these types of folks will be. The effort you put in getting sh*t placed is usually more important than how dope your beats are. You can be Timbo/Dre/Primo combined times a hundred, thousand, trillion, but if you're a lazy f*ck and unimaginative, your tracks will collect dust.
