Or is it the consequences you face, is what makes you "act right" or "be good?"

For instance, if you could kill your greatest personal enemy, would you refrain from doing it because you're afraid of the lawful consequences or is it because you feel it is wrong to kill someone?

Well?

We can use this in a lot of cases. And the truth is the vast majority of us don't act "unethically" because of the consequences we may face which are not including consequences of a "guilty conscious."

But before you answer this question ask yourself, how much does the decision impact your own selfish needs? If it is not much, then you would not have acted unethically in the first place regardless if there was a consequence to it. Example: You wouldn't steal clothes you don't need or want.

Discuss.

I'd kill him without a second thought and fear nothing.

It is the height of hypocrisy for someone who believes Christ/Allah/others to think he is moral.
All religions which are based on a form of heaven/hell type of reward/punishment system breed only slaves and cowards. They're most definitely not moral. They just bend the the power of their supposed god. They act - or rather try to- in a 'moral' manner because god will reward them with eternal bliss, and try to avoid acting in an amoral manner for fear of eternal suffering in hell. They're essentially glorified house pets.

I think most people act through a carrot and stick approach. But I don't think considering consequences is 'bad' in decision making. What you're examining when considering consequences is the whole sweep of the action, not just the first event

I think you can rationalize yourself into doing anything in a bad or tense situation if it was truly on some sci fi sh1t where that 'event' got dissociated from you permanently

A twist in this issue though is that guilt is a big deal for many people and can ravage them. So even just knowing yourself that you did it can be a consequence that's unwanted

I would still not kill if I could get away with it. Only in defence of myself or fam.

I have my own rules of conduct. I've stollen and cheated without remorse before. I feel that people who only do good because of the fear of the law or jail are weak. Too weak to govern themselves...

im moral because its who i am. i make decisions based on whatd i want to happen. i feel at times i am more closed off than the average person but i blame that on my inner voice/morality. i dont do it because of god or fear of consequence , i do it simply because its how i was brought up
