I remember this controversy when it happened. It was quite wild.
Basically the major had someone in the audience systematically cough to indicate he has the right answer. It seems they were only meant to do this for a few rounds till he got about 100k but he got greedy and they did it all the way till he won the whole thing. The show noticed something was up but didn't stop the show and the just told him after he won't be getting any money and he got sued. I don't think he did jail time but the show won the case against him.
