How do you make a good melody out of a sample (using slicer)?

When it comes to sampling, I can cook something nice when it comes to directly sampling a part of a song (simply taking seconds of the song). However, I can't rearrange a song and really mess around with it using Slicer.

Up until now, I've only sampled using Edison and sampled straight out of the song. I haven't messed around with chops.

What is your best advice? It's been difficult for me to play around with QWERTY and make good melodies.

im learning myself...one thing i did that helped was i started using SliceX instead of Fruity Slicer...i feel like there are more options but maybe it just looks cooler lol

the only thing i can say is just let the metronome play and fukk around with the keys until something good comes up...im still more likely to just use a full sample like you said, but i'm starting to mess around with the slices more and more...i'd imagine the more open the sample is the more options you have with it too.

I haven't ever used it but if your chops are accurate then it shouldn't be too difficult.

For instance you can chop on the snare or if you have a melody calculate the bpm and chop on the measure i.e an 8 bar loop chopped into 32 equal pieces

What do you use to sample?

When you're in fruity slicer, there's a couple tricks you can do to make it easier.

First of all, I usually copy 4 loops, so four different slicers. And I do the same tricks to each of them, that way one slicer isn't different from the rest.

I've been having medical issues, so I haven't made any beats recently, but let me see if I can remember what I do off the top, because it's not that hard and I've done it a thousand times.

Take a loop, put it into FL Slicer. If you found a loop that's perfect 4 bar, it'll usually say "32 beats", but usually the loop's on human time, which means I see '28' a lot. But yeah, note chops are waaay too short.

Drag the 32 all the way down to 8, right click, and hit "chop to beat".
I'm sure you've done this before.

Here's my guess in where it's becoming hard for you.

You have to pull the "8" back up to "16". Or else the chops play too fast to really play around with them, it's hard to explain without having made a beat in a minute, but I'm pretty sure this has an effect on it.

Do you just use software only? I've been meaning to add more than just a laptop to my setup, but I don't know if there's hardware out there that would make my life easier.

When I look at the great producers in hip-hop, they're always around keyboards, MPCs, etc. so I'm wondering if I need more than just FL to make dope beats. What would your advice be?

I just map out the sample manually... selecting the sounds that I like the most. Then I fukk around wit that shyt on the keyboard. One tip - its good to have a root chord - at least one solid harmony that lasts for a half note to a whole note

Oh yeah... and its good to start associating certain samples with breaks, or drum sounds in your library... chopping over drums is much easier.

Breh, do you use hardware only? I've been thinking of adding a keyboard to my setup so I can play around with samples more.

primarily, mainly because my job does a lot with computers and the last thing i want to do is chill at home one a computer too. so i find it great to have multiple hobbies that just dont entail keyboarding and mousing

i have my keyboard in this vid where i put together a quick lil beat
