Yeah I agree I hardly ever start a beat with the drums. Never understood it. For me, the melody or sample always dictates what kind of drums you are going to use on the beat. Only time Ill start with the drums or understand it is if its a drum-orientated track I.E "The Motto
Kicks and snares, then percs. Layer em up with percs and fx etc. to fill em out.
I can understand starting with drums, if you got a very tight, infectious drum pattern, almost all melodies will fall in place. When I cant come up with melodies, Ill come up with a bunch of drum patterns instead for later use.
Do ya lay your kicks and snares on the same track. Or solo it for both. When I midi keyboard up I tend to do it with both. Then layer the snares with another track over it.
Or do ya use drum sequencers, piano rolls and software beatmachines? I jus learned how to use Logics Ultrabeat yesterday. shyt is banana's
i always start with some banging drums which may or may not be changed around as i sample around it. i couuld make 3 beats before i get to the final because of this. ima try your guys way right now
first i go boom-bo-boom-bap, bo-boom-bo-bo-bomp-bap. then i'll go something like ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-tiiiissss ti-ti-tiiiisss ti ti ti, then i'll throw in a pshhhhhh here and there. then i might add a filtered drum break or add some percussion...and viola.
I usually start with the melodies but I also start wit tha percussion first sometimes. I usually look for a snare first , kick or high hat(they interchange), open high hat or some other types of percussion then id look for some short clean sounds to rock along with the drum pattern I knockout. I don't usually sample drums at all.
