how do i build my strength to be able to do dips

I tried doing dips at the gym today I couldn't even do one :snoop:, how do I step my game up breh? :sadcam:

What kind of dips were you trying to perform breh? There's chest dips and tricep dips.

A good starter is bench dips. Bench Dips Exercise Guide and Video

If you can't do them with your feet up, start with your feet on the ground. Eventually you'll build enough strength to do them big boy dips.

If you're doing the chest or tricep dips like in the links above then you can also try doing an assisted negative dip. Grab a bench, step, chair, etc. to help with the positive part of the dip. As you're going back down on the negative use resistance slowly lowering yourself back down for a count of about 5 seconds. This should help you build enough strength were you can do these exercises eventually on your own.

i can say from experience that bench dips do not translate to parallel bar dips :shake:

but to each his own

lol @ big boy bench dips tho

I tried chest dips but imma try the bench dips to see if i get better results

Chest dips are difficult for the beginner. Try with your feet up first, do 3-4 sets and rep to failure. Once you can do 4 sets of 10-15 reps easy then throw some weight on your lap. I used to have my girl sit on me when she came to the gym with me. :pachaha: Its a good workout though breh. Good luck.


Edit: I would also super set my bench dips with triangle/diamond push ups. Something to consider when you get more comfortable with your dips.

What kind of weight are you using on your other tricep exercises? Skull crusher? Close grip bench? Tricep extensions?

Like that one brah said, getting to a lower body weight to where you can manage dips is probably the best answer. I never liked bench dips.
