I know why it flopped. It was a project that the directors had wanted to make for a very long time, and after they brought Disney so much success, the company was like "
Fine. We'll make your damn film." And then they hardly promoted it. Kind of fukked up when you think about it and it's even more strange that Musker and Clements went on to make more hits for Disney, but 
. It's a very underrated animated movie that should have a bigger audience since it's been on the home market for almost two decades which is where films like Secret of Nimh and The Iron Giant (two animated films with modest box office success) flourished .
