I played pt 1&2 a decade ago n felt underwhelmed as a teen. Bought some used copies n revisited this series to give it a fair re-review as a more mature adult who understands the fps genre better compared to back then. I also ran through part 3 which i missed originally.

I have a lot to say but wont unless people is interested. How do yall feel about this First Person Shooter from Insomniac?

Starkset...
Loved the first one. Good story multiplayer with the 40 man free for all. The custom sniper matches with the fans that elevated you into the sky. It was all I played for a minute

Resistance:Fall of Man(aka Halo:Combat Devolved)

Graphics: they were whatever. it was a launch game so I aint mad.

Look: holy brown n grey. if this aint the blandest lookin shyt I ever seen. I know a lot of games from this era had brown n grey but this shyt takes it to the next level. when my weapons blending in with the every environment, that aint good.

the coolest thing about the games environments is that some pieces are destructible. Theres historical places that would have been nice but the color palette kills it. the coolest set piece in the game would probably be the facility in the second missions that shows how humans are turned into chimera.

Weapons:The weapon wheel is decent. there's a couple of interesting guns

Gameplay: This is my big issue. I couldn't find a sensitivity on the controller that made the aiming feel good. there was a jerkiness to it that wasnt fun. On top of that, the enemy AI is dumb as rocks. Insomniacs solution was to just throw more enemies at you and make them tanky. on top of that 90 percent of the time you fighting these guys
latest

I thought they looked pretty cool, but by the end of the first level it became a snoozer to fight them.
On top of this, the challenge of the game is checkpoints too spread out, along with random deaths that I didnt see. instead of enemies tactically tryin to outmaneuver you, the game becomes a shooting gallery. Some of the Chimera got this gun called the Auger. there's several levels that provide you spots for cover, yet this gun shoots through objects, making cover useless.
movement is okay. no sprint but doesn't feel too bad. jumping is awful tho. I get the big stereotype is white men can't jump but this is ridiculous. for a chimera infected super soldier my guy Sgt Hale got no hops.
health was okay. it regenerates some, but if you lose a bar you need health packs.
overall, the combat loop was just okay, but not exciting. it can be challenging, but not in a satisfying way. Dark Souls smart this aint.

Vehicle gameplay: Its alright. the coolest vehicle the game gives you(this big spider robot) is also given the shortest sections. one of these sections was less than a minute:dahell: the most boring vehicle(the jeep thing) is given the longest section

Story: told like a documentary by this lady you meet in the 2nd mission. she narrates the events as they go on. the scenes dont say much, just narrate that the chimera are taking over. a lot of the info about these creatures is in data folders you can find. the fact I played this 2 weeks ago n can't remember much of the story says enough.

Characters: Hale is a quiet protagonist. I aint gonna hate on this, the silent killer is a staple in FPS games. At some point in the game you team up with this lieutenant who doesn't trust you. pretty generic all around with no personality.

Music: Generic WW2 sounding stuff.

multiplayer: had to go off of old memory here, since the servers been shut down. I remember it was okay, the coolest part of it was the fact you could have a bunch of players on screen(think it was 30 or 40.

Overall: Resistance 1 doesn't do anything awful, it just got nothin great to make it stand out. Example: Bioshock 1's gunplay is okay, but its got a good story to fall back on. Doom 1 has almost no story, but a great combat loop to rely on.

6/10

Resistance 2(aka Chimera of Duty:Bland Ops 2)

Graphics: 2 years makes a big difference. Major leap from Fall of Man. No complaints, it looks good.

Look: No more brown n grey. Theres more variety in the level environments. I can actually tell what level im on now, compared to R1 where everything looked the same. I liked the skyboxes too, real cool lookin. Game got kind of an orange tint.
maxresdefault.jpg

Weapons: no more weapon wheel. R2 decided to hop on that halo/cod wave n limit you to 2. This would be fine if the combat was exciting, but it aint. One of the standouts of R1 was toyin around with all the different weapons you collect.

Gameplay: more checkpoints n less health tank enemies is a plus. Gunplay feels a lil better than R1. That’s where the good ends tho.:francis: The challenge in the game is the same as R1 minus the tanky enemies. R2 makes you feel cheated over n over again. The combat loop is boring, boss fights are scripted so theres no variety on replays. The chameleon enemies are cool, but they pop up at the exact same spot over n over with only one movement, which is towards you. There is sprint this time, but some of the mini bosses move so fast that sprint is useless. Hale moves like mashed potatoes n cant outrun shyt. There is no balance between the player n enemies. Your companion AI? Enemies ignore them every time n go straight for you. Your companions are there for looks only, to give the illusion that u with a squad.

Vehicle Gameplay: instead of improving the vehicle sections of R1, Insomniac threw in the towel. No vehicles this time.

Story: No docu style this time, its all cutscenes. Delves a lil more into who the Chimera are. Theres also a big bad that hangs over the campaign, Deadulus. His communication with Hale keeps things a lil interesting. I thought the endin was ballsy, with Hale succumbing to the Chimera virus n becoming one of them. I aint like how they got there tho. The entire game the doc keeps tellin Hale to take his inhibitors. Hale keeps sayin naw he’ll do it later. So there was zero shock he turned in the end. shyt, even in the second level he goes to grab the inhibitors n doesn’t take em. :mjlol: What the hell.

Characters. Hale talks a lil more. Capellis with Hale n your generic angry military guy. The doc is some Russian guy that does all the explainin throught the campaign. The only memorable character was Deadulus, cuz I thought his design was cool lookin. Flyin squid type thing with a distorted human face.

Music: :yeshrug:

Multiplayer: Call of duty but with a bunch of people on screen from what I remember.

Overall: 6/10. It fixed some issues with the first game while addin its own issues.

Resistance 3(aka Half Life: Chimera DLC skins pack)

Graphics: pretty decent for its time period. No complaints
resistance-3-1.jpg

Look: looks kinda like a half life clone. I aint mad at it, the world looks interesting, does a good job of settin up the atmosphere(it was implied at the end of R2 the Chimera were just about to wreck earth. In this game it shows they did).

Weapons: Weapon wheel is back. They feel fine to shoot, n theres a nice variety. Theres real weapons feedback compared to the first too. I mean This type of shyt was around in the 90s, but its nice to have this in a 2011 game.

Gameplay: Better than the first 2 games. Enemy placement n squad tactics feel a lil more thought out, ai seems better. Insomniac seems to finally be understanding. Another problem they fixed was enemy reaction when you shoot them.. Just like the weapons feedback, enemies finally react to when you shoot them:ohhh: We had this in games like 2001 Halo 1, but nice for Insomniac to finally get it right a decade after that game.
no more regenerating health, health packs are back. this aint bother me.

Story: we had big setup at the end of Resistance 2. Sooo, they decided to go with a smaller, more focused story for part 3 with Capelli(who killed Hale after he turned Chimera at the end of R2). As a side story, this was okay, but how do you have your big finale be so small? This narrative choice would have been better used for part 1 to establish the characters n build it bigger in part 2 n 3. Whoever did the blueprint for this trilogies story was smokin more pcp than Grits n Gravy from that Chapelle Show skit. You cant finish a trilogy with a small spinoff story. Also, this shyt aint make sense. The Chimera took over the world, had multiple towers. Controlled the entire planet. But shuttin down the tower in New York magically made them fall back after they achieved world domination at the end of 2?:dahell:

Characters: more emphasis on Capelli, his friends, and his family. Prolyl the most characterization in the entire series. Nothin groundbreakin but it was solid. For an fps this was fine.

Multiplayer: never got a chance to experience this ones multi. Again servers are shut down. I am amazed that the servers were shut down after only 3 years tho. Halo 3, a game from 2007, will have its servers shut down this December(not mcc, 360 halo 3). Over 14 years after launch. I did read up on R3 multi, n came to find out the large amount of players from r2(60) n R1(40) was gone in favor of a 16 player multi. So the highlight for me from the first 2 games was removed.

Overall: 7.5/10. I wish this had been the first game in the series. It felt like Insomniac was finally getting comfortable with the fps genre n knew what type of game it wanted to make.

The series overall: playin through 1&2, they weren’t bad, but seemed like they were made by people that never made an fps, which was true. By the time they got the gears runnin in 3, they quit the series. I never played the psp or ps vita games so no opinion on them. An overall missed opportunity to make something special. When we talk about the great FPS of the 00’s, Resistance aint rbought up. When you talk of the great Insomniac games, its usually Spyro, Ratchet, n Spiderman. Resistance seems like its been a forgotten franchise, n after replayin it, I can understand why. Lots of potential, but never really nailed any aspect.

on paper, I shoulda loved this series. 1.The Spyo ps1/Ratchet n Clank ps2 trilogy was some of the most fun I ever had. 2. its an fps. 3. I loved the chimera design n thought they looked cool as fukk. off that alone this was a knock out of the ballpark, but when I played I had so many moments where id google to see if the campaigns was almost over. I after a decade to replay the first 2, its safe to say I'll never go back. part 3? a maybe after a few years but I doubt it.
