He was directing masterpieces in the 70's
Then in the 80's he directed a few great movies
Then the 90's came and it was all but over
How did he fall off so fast?

He didn't really. You can see his fundamental skills in stuff like Tetro, The Rainmaker, Life Without Zoe, and even The Godfather Part III. His filmmaking gifts are still there, he just doesn't want to engage with it and do ambitious and epic work. George Lucas lost his genius, Francis Ford Coppola refuses to summon his.

Wasn't Lucas, Coppola, Spielberg, etc like an actual click back in the days when they first started? They all did kind of fall off creatively after their massive hits imo. Coppola's only gaff in the Godfather III was casting his daughter in the film other than that I'm a fan of GF3. You see Scorsese doesn't fukk around, he sticks to his bread and butter of gangsters and voice overs/narration:wow:

Yeah, them nikkas was tight. I heard Lucas did the Newspaper montage in The Godfather, and Scorsese helped Coppola with location scouting in NYC.

De Palma was the cockiest motherfukker (and biggest underachiever) of the group, talking about Star Wars wasn't good at a private screening just for these dudes. Spielberg had to reassure Lucas that that shyt was going to be a hit.

Filming Apocalypse Now changed him. There's a great documentary about the BTS of Coppola filming that movie called Hearts of Darkness. So many problems marred the production, from weather delays to Martin Sheen suffering a heart attack, that blew the budget outta control and seriously damaged Coppola's mental well-being.

Apocalypse Now! happened. He lost 100 lbs, contemplated suicide many times, Marlon Brando was being very difficult to work with, and there were production woes all over the place. I still think he made some great films in the 80's and 90's but nothing like his 70's work. The filming of AN was a giant mess and it's a miracle that the finished product came out as spectacular as it did. It broke him though.

Yeah, I remember hearing about that documentary, which is named after the book The Heart of Darkness

I think the documentary Hearts of Darkness comes with the Blu ray version of Apocalypse Now too

Yup, it does, just found this pic of the Blu ray which includes the documentary as well

One thing that I didn't know until I watched the Heart of Darkness documentary was that George Lucas was originally supposed to direct Apocalypse Now (with Coppola producing) but then things got cluttered up, and he eventually stepped down from the director job, Francis stepped up to direct, and George went on to direct a pet project of his called "Star Wars." Strange how things work out.
