Yeah, but how did Scorsese continue to crank out great movies while Coppola just lost it? I wonder if he just lost his passion for it? :patrice:
Yeah he definitely could've lost passion for it. People just age differently, think of all the great NBA players who were at their prime for a few seasons then fell off. Then you look at someone like Jordan who was killing fools at the age of 40 in the league. Scorsese is one of the GOATS and Coppola will forever be remembered for Godfather and Apocalypse Now but when comparing him to other directors you do have to take longevity into account.

I agree. Great post, bruh.

Don't forget The Conversation and Rumble Fish! I love Rumble Fish, that's 1 of my favorite movies of all time.

Coppola went broke and developed a cocaine addiction.
Those are the things that will alter your ability to continue your artistic voice they compromise you.

Scorsese made some of his all-time best movies coming of a coke binge though.:russ:

But regarding Scorsese, that man just breathes cinema. I've mentioned this before but he might be one of the most technically gifted directors of all time. He is someone who understands what every frame of a movie should look, sound and feel like in a way only a few men do. That's why he never fell off because it might be his sole reason for living.

In Coppola's case, I think the answer is this:

After apocoplypse now he got disillusioned with the movie biz, spent more time with the fam and started working for the cheques.

Godfather 1,2, and apocalypse now already solidifies him as one of the goats.

The experience burned him out and while he didn't lose his passion for film, I don't think he ever wanted to do something so challenging again. That's why his 80s films are all of a much smaller scale until he got broke and sold out in the 90s with The Godfather Pt III.

Everyone handles addiction differently.
Sam Peckinpah is one of my favorite directors, cocaine destroyed him as a director, absolutely destroyed him and he never recovered until later.

I like Scorsese, but technically tony scott and Jim Cameron are my guys, especially scott in terms of editing and cameron in terms of directing action and chaos.while still feeling immersed. Bay is great at technical art of directing action, unfortunately he hates stories.
