Leviathan basically connected itself to the dude's head, thus, making him an extension of Leviathan itself. So in a sense he got powered up because Leviathan saw him a willing servant for it's deeds and rewarded him.

It's a bit confusing, but I don't think Pinhead and the other Cenobrehs didn't inflict suffering on others prior to their own transformation. They were searching for their own masochistic pleasures. Channard was both Sadistic and Masochistic. That's just my opinion though.
