Speaking from personal experience I would agree. I had an incident where I was ticketed for not having my current insurance on me. I had only had a ticket once before in Chicago ( a parking ticket) so I figured I would just pay it that would be the end of it. I didn't realize I had to appear in court for the ticket and paid it after the date but nonetheless paid it. A year or so later I get pulled over again (big surprise
) and as the cop is checking my drivers license he comes back and places me under arrest. Of course I'm like "for what!?" He says "for an unpaid ticket/failure to appear." I explain that I did indeed pay it and he asks if I have the receipt,
I told him "not on me it was over a year ago" and I get hauled off to jail. I had to call up some family and have them bail me out which was around $230.00 or sit there till the morning or possibly longer for my trial. Fortunately it wasn't a problem for my family to come up with the money otherwise I would have had to sit there for a couple days at least. I think after all the court fees and the state money grab in driver responsibility fees I ended up paying over $1000 as the result of 1 ticket. I can't imagine if I was poor and couldn't come up with any of the money and the results of that. Oh and the funny thing about my receipt for the original ticket, it says plainly on the top of it "clearance for failure to appear." If only I had it on me at the time.
