What is it that you're looking for in a movie? You want realistic, supernatural, a back story, what? I see a lot of threads and people complaining and pointing out plot holes in movies. I agree writers need to step their game up and no more reboots are needed, but at this point what else can be done?
i personally like leatherface over freddy and jason, michael myers to me wasn't scary at all.

side question:
do y'all consider high tension a horror movie?

Leave heavy cgi alone, it makes horror movies look more unrealistic than they are. Don't rely on jumpscares, they aren't scary. Being startled by a loud noise isn't the same thing as being scary. It loses it's affect if it's not properly built up too. Focus on building atmosphere, having characters the audience can invest in and coming up with creative death scenes(if you have any).

There are different types of horror but depending on the sub genre I look for the following. Creepy atmosphere, actual characters, good death scenes, a mystery determining who the killer is, suspense, surreal feeling, tension, scary looking monster, anxiety, sense of dread, makeup and lighting effects, interesting location, weird premise, etc.

I think I enjoy realistic more than supernatural but I like both a lot.

i like things that get in your head. seeing someone get cut up is gross, not scary. but movies laden with tension, the "what if", the unknown, or making the mundane "creepy" (weird kids, clowns, bizarre behavior, dire situations) are what get me :nervous: i'm definitely into psychological thrillers/horror and supernatural flicks.

Most important thing is providing a reason to care about the character the scenerio is happening to.
If I don't like or care about the protagonist, there is no interest in seeing things happen to them. This goes for all genres of film.

Breaking Bad is about an unlikely drug dealer. The protagonist is a cancer riddled unappreciated genius that was exploited and cheated out of his career by his college peers, mistreated by his carwash employer, belittled by his wife, and cannot provide for his crippled son and pregnant wife... so he sells drugs.

Weeds is also about an unlikely drug dealer. Only she is just some suburban c*nt with nothing whatsoever stopping her from getting a regular job.

One is an alltime classic, the other a mediocre throwaway sitcom no one talks about anymore.

Practical effects are key. Leave that Cgi shyt fest alone. I can still watch The Thing now and it kills 99.5% of horror movies. I'm so glad that totrue porn shyt that people were passing for horror has died. You also have to write characters people are going to care about or relate to keep them vested throughout the movie. The genre is all but dead bc the script is paper thin with stupid ass characters that are flat and generic. I know his books are hard to translate to film but Stephen King is the master of this shyt. Reading his stories really scared the shyt out of me and some still creep me the hell out not for the fire or horror but the idea of certain shyt out their or possibilities that can actually exist.

I look for different things in different sub genres. With slashers, I want building of suspense, interesting kills and a good killer/final girl battle at the end. Supernatural, I want realism. Not necessarily that everything needs to be super believable, but it has to have a component of believability to it, and special effects good enough not to take me completely out of it.

But in any subgenre, you need to want the characters to survive at some point. There has to be the transition from wanting to see Jason carve up some random campers to wanting to see the final girl survive. That's a big reason why I didn't like Don't Breathe as much as most people. I didn't give a shyt if they all died.

Why wouldn't high tension be considered horror?

I kinda figured she survived due to the youngster hero complex and the relationship with young girl at beginning, other dude was too cocky i knew it would be his downfall

I don't think that there should be a total ban on CGI but instead strike a good balance between practical effects and CGI. When done hand in hand though you can end up with a really cool looking result.
