Aw shyt, this was actually really dope, definitely recommend seeing this.
I think it's pretty incredible how this film is able to maintain its focus so strongly on the relationship between Otis and his father, and never really wanders too far from those two. There were a lot of moments where the film could've taken detours exploring other aspects and relationships, which would've been to the detriment of the film in my opinion. Damn near every interaction between Otis and his father is captivating.
You know, I was also thinking during the movie that Shia wasn't really convincing as the father, that perhaps someone else could've played the role. Something about his voice in particular, he just can't seem to shake his still youthful inflection that can be somewhat distracting. However, by the end of it I realized that no one else could've really done it, and if they had casted someone else, the film would've absolutely lost something. Shia's performance is special because this is an instance where the audience gets to witness something genuinely cathartic -- a powerful expression beyond memorizing and rehearsing lines.
Really dope.
