Omar Douglas passed the toughest test of his young career with flying colors his last time out. His reward? An assignment that figures to be even more challenging.
Douglas (15-0, 11 KOs) closes out the year with his third fight of 2015 when he battles Frank De Alba (17-1-2, 6 KOs) on December 29 at the Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania (Fox Sports 1, 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT). The bout, which is set for 10 rounds, will headline a Premier Boxing Champions Toe-to-Toe Tuesdays card.
A rising 130-pound prospect, Douglas has been idle since September 15, when he rolled to a 10-round unanimous decision over Braulio Santos in California, Pennsylvania. Douglas, 24, dropped Santos in the first and second rounds, but couldn’t finish him off, going 10 rounds for the first time in his career.
Prior to defeating Santos, who entered with a 12-3 record, Douglas scored consecutive first-round knockouts of journeyman Osnel Charles and veteran Daniel Attah.
While Douglas is known for his heavy hands—he has five first-round KOs—De Alba is more of a boxer-puncher who usually wears down his opponents and leaves things in the judges’ hands. Those judges almost always see things in favor of the 28-year-old Puerto Rican, who hasn’t tasted defeat since dropping a four-round decision in his pro debut.
He’s currently on a 15-fight winning streak since back-to-back four-round draws in November 2011 and February 2012.
De Alba will be in action for the fourth time this year, his most impressive performance coming on May 29 when the southpaw scored a sixth-round knockout of Bernando Gomez Uribe. Uribe was by far the most accomplished opponent De Alba has faced as a pro—at least until now.
“I am really grateful for this opportunity,” De Alba says. “I've had to make a lot of sacrifices to get to this stage. Now that we're here, I’m going to take advantage. I know [Douglas] is a strong fighter, but we will be 100 percent come fight night.”
But fighters should have plenty of fan support in this one, as the Puerto Rico-born De Alba now resides in Reading, Pennsylvania, which is less than an hour’s drive from Bethlehem. Meanwhile, Douglas will be traveling just 90 miles from his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.
“I was a five-time Pennsylvania Golden Gloves champion, so the fans there are very familiar with me,” Douglas says. “I’ve never fought at that venue, but it’s [close to] Wilmington, so all of my friends and family will have no problem getting there.”
