"Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Jameis Winston is reportedly being investigated for sexual assault.
The Tallahassee Democrat reports that the Tallahassee Police Department received a complaint of sexual battery against Winston, stemming from an incident on Dec. 7, 2012. The paper contacted the Tallahassee police Wednesday morning requesting police reports involving Winston. The TPD told the paper that they were redacting documents in response to the request before sending the report on Wednesday evening.
“The case is open and active and the victim is working with the State Attorney's Office,” Tallahassee police spokesman David Northway told the paper.
No charges have been filed against Jameis Winston, and attorney Tim Jansen confirmed to the Democrat that he's representing Winston, and denied the allegations.
“This case has been going on for over a year. The case was basically closed and we're not sure why it's opened up," Jansen said. "We've been cooperating with the law enforcement agencies and we're hoping to get a quick resolution in favor of Mr. Winston."
Jansen also said that Winston has not been interviewed by the police or prosecutors.
Florida State issued a statement on the matter Wednesday night.
"We are aware of a matter that was investigated by the Tallahassee Police Department almost a year ago," said Florida State associate athletic director Rob Wilson in a statement. "Because the investigation has not been closed by the TPD, we cannot comment further at this time. We look forward to a speedy resolution of the issue. There is no change in Jameis Winston's status. Coach Fisher and Jameis will be answering questions about football only until there is a resolution."
Winston has taken the college football world by storm this season, helping lead Florida State to a 9-0 start and the No. 2 ranking in the current BCS standings. He's also considered one of the favorites for this year's Heisman Trophy."
