we should generate a big list of potential topics/questions, create a poll, and let the people of HL vote on which topics we discuss. it might help create a culture of listener buy-in :manny:

Lol...hardly anyone posts in HL and only a few of them even listen to the podcasts. Let's let the participants keep deciding topics.

1) i think you'd be surprised... we have a lot of lurkers in HL

2) the way we approach picking topics and how we approach discussing them has led to many of our topics becoming a little dry and repetitive. we gotta spice it up somehow and get more creative with how we engage in our topics/discussions imo

I'd be fine with a poll thread, the top results don't have to be mandatory

yea it's just to get a pulse on what topics HL would like to hear. None of it is guaranteed to make the final cut.

think of it as data gathering to make better informed decisions :shaq:

Well I disagree. I don't think it's gotten dry and repetitive especially if we keep having new participants. Also a poll would be useless because of the short amount of time it would be up.

We can't even come up topics ourselves until the last minute, so you expect to come up with a long ass list of topics AND put up a poll and get adequate participation in it in a matter of days? Seems useless to me. Plus new news comes out all the time and we have to discuss it. For instance, the embassy attack happened on the day of the last one and it was only right that we incorporated it.

I think we can have a happy middle by announcing that if anyone has a topic they'd like to share they can come in here and suggest it and we can consider it. especially since these days the topics are less concrete and participants segue into things

Hey wassup guys just wanted to let yall know that it is a lot easier to stream live via YouTube than it is mixlr or most other options , We did our GeekSet podcast live for the first time this week and had 5 people at the same time pretty much no problem, you can have things up and running in about 5 minutes, instruction just seem long cause am trying to be detailed

To broadcast live from YouTube you need to :

1. Set up a HL gmail account if you don't already have one . This gives you access to YouTube and Google + both of which you will need to broadcast live

2. The main people who want to participate in the podcast that day your going to be live should also have Google + accounts . Make sure every one is added to the HL's Google + page, they call it "circles", adding people before hand makes things a lot easier than trying to add people in during the show

STEPS 3-5 ARE ONLY FOR THE ONE PERSON WHO WILL BE SIGNED INTO THE HL'S GOOGLE ACCOUNT

Broadcasting live instructions

3. One person, preferably the one with the better internet connection should be signed into the HL Google + page only, no need to have the YouTube tab open BUT make sure you are signed into YouTube

4. Once in Google + in your upper right hand corner you will see where it says "start a hang out" click that. Next you will get a pop up windows in this window you will have the option to add people that you want in the hang out but more importantly you will see a option that says "enable hang outs on air" written in small letters MAKE SURE TO SELECT THAT OPTION, them right above it give your hang out a name. Dont worry your hangout still is not broadcasting at this point

In this pop up window and in your hangout you have the option to keep video on or off , we chose to turn all video off and go with audio only

Once your done click "hang out" to go into your hang out , your hang out is still not broadcasting though.

5. If everything has gone ok you should be in a hangouts tab with everyone you added to the hang out , if anyone didnt make it you have the option to invite them in. Once everybody is good to go you can go ahead and select "start broadcast " in the upper right hand corner. Your audio/video stream will now go live on youtube

Very important also a second or two BEFORE you select start broadcast you should also press record on whatever program you use to record your podcast normally. We use audacity.

After that your good to go and live on air. Here are a couple of tips

- Try to have everyone added to the HL's Google + page before hand , adding a new person to the page ( not to the hang out) took use up to 5 mins for whatever reason

- Whoever is the person signed into the HL Google + has to make sure to NOT CLOSE THE GOOGLE+ page or sign out of the HL Google accounts anywhere not gmail, gtalk, etc under any circumstances this will end the live broadcast , the other people will still be in the hangout but it will not be live, if this does happen though its pretty easy to recover just sign in again have someone re-invite into the room but try to avoid it

- Once you are done recording , the podcast is automatically uploaded on to youtube so no need to worry about that

any thing else feel free to ask me, am post now on you can set it up to receive calls

To receive calls it is also quite simple , it worked during our test run a day before the show but for some reason did not work the day of the show

1. Sign into your HL account and https://www.google.com/voice and sign up for a google voice number

2. Once you have your number set up in the upper right hang corner click the small wheel and click settings in the first tab you will see a option that says "forward calls to" make sure it set to Google chat only

3. The day of your podcast leave your HL gmail open in a tab

4. When you want people to call in give them your google voice number , if everything works well when people call in you will get a small pop up window asking you to pick up or decline a call. You should be able to talk to the person just fine and there voice should be transmitted via the live stream just fine too

Like i said earlier this worked for us during our test run but not during our live show so you guys can play around with it see if you have better luck

Thanks man, I really appreciate that you took the time to specify the details

so basically, instead of skype we'd be using the built in google browser functionality for the mic? And we need to find a way to get audacity to record that?

Are you recording with a usb mic? we had a fair bit of trouble using a usb mic and getting audacity to record the input/output

Yea no need for skype at all , as long u on Google browser or any modern browser everything should work just fine, i know one of our guys was using safari and he had to install a plug in, but that happened automatically and in a couple of seconds

When you have audacity open all you have to do is press the record button and it will record just fine no need to do anything extra

I just use my laptops mic no usb mic and Jutt uses "blue snowball" mic which i believe is usb, we never had any issues with recording

what do you mean by input/output?
