After the Trayvon Martin tragedy, we asked ourselves: Why do so many people see a black kid wearing a hoodie and think ‘thug’? And yet, when they see Mark Zuckerberg -- who wears hoodies all the time -- they think, ‘genius’?

We were forced to confront a deeper question: where are all the black (or Latino or Native American) Mark Zuckerbergs?

Though more people of color are entering the tech world, these numbers are not enough. So we decided to do something about it.

#YesWeCode is a major initiative to help train 100,000 low-opportunity youth to become the next generation of world-class computer programmers.

We've teamed up with dozens of allies, including tech visionaries, celebrities, community leaders and activists from all over the country. We've forged a partnership with Essence Magazine and music legend Prince. At the 20th Anniversary Essence Festival in New Orleans over 4th of July weekend, we will publicly launch #YesWeCode with a bang.

Chris Bosh did a spot a couple years ago promoting coding. As much as these kids are addicted to social media and smart phones, they might as well get some certs.

I was taught to code in 4th grade and then messed with it off and on in the Boys & Girls Club, I was able to do basic stuff and run my codes through a compiler. I left it alone in high school because I was more interested in the medical field.

Its not that hard, but its like math, you have to build on what you learn.

I was just sitting in the whip chilling about to walk to the house. A young man with a hoodie and cornrows tapped on my window. I thought to myself what could this young professional want? I put down my window and inquired. He said "where did you get the car. breh"? I said "Connecticut but you can find them online sometimes, breh". He nodded. I then said "you're welcome to buy this for xxxxx". He said he didn't have it right now. I dapped him up and was on my way. Neither of us brandished firearms during this exchange.

the one thing I would say about this type of project is it's snatching kids late (middle and highschool). This innitiative really needs to try and push these ideas WAAAYYYYY earlier. The problem with inner city "enrichment programs" is that it grabs kids that are already smart. (This coming from someone who personally benefited from such enrichment programs) all while leaving behind a large swath of people.

The goal should be to properly educate ALL children this way, not just the kids who are going to do well because they're smart. I would like to see something like this on a more GENERAL level.

Matter of fact, does anyone know of any self help coding sites that a kid, say 6-12 years old that they might go to in order to help learn some basic ideas?

i agree w this.

I think the girl program is for younger kids... but it's for black girls only. my half sister, i think started it at 9 or 10.

But yeah, they also make it so that if you're smart and ur home life isn't completely fukked up -- u are gonna be picked out and catered to.

Coding is something that can be learn at a young age just like Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto.

some kids do learn on their own...

but due to nature of children, they always do better at everything in life with guidance. It's really time to change to perception (self perception, idc what random cac think) about urban youth and one way is mass movement towards developing technology as opposed to only being a consumer to technology.

The softwares this article recommend looks horrible, I see no reason not to use the real thing.

Kids can't understand If-then statements
