This was one of the greatest storylines in wwf history really

he was such an awesome legit crazy heel

so simple formal champ comes back after years old and crazy

Some of the best promos in the business

this is genius right here he’s a heel but he won’t chill with just other heels cuz he’s different

build him up they let him beat Bret just to get squashed by Nash in 15 seconds

but he was super over as heel they could of did much more with it

In-hindsight this was maybe secretly a blueprint for Danielson to follow. Backlund really didn't have a gimmick, he was just a Wrestler. When he started down this road, it got him more attention than he ever had.

Just like Backlund with Diesel, Danielson got squashed at Wrestlemania by Sheamus for the title.

Only though the times had changed, and Danielson in the eyes of everyone had a charismatic style of wrestling.

It was this time that Team Hell No sent Bryan over the top with his chemistry with Kane.

I wish I could find that Wrestlemania XI promo when he was in a police interrogation room going crazy interrogating an EMPTY CHAIR. :mjlol: :laff:

Backlund: KEVIN NASH, YOU'RE LIKE A NEANDERTHAL! :damn:

Shawn: Did you hear that, McMahon, "Kevin Nash"? :sas1:

Vince: Yep. :francis:

Shawn: You know who that is? :sas2:

Backlund: NO! YOU'RE LIKE THE TYRANNOSAURUS REX OF THE WWF! :damn:

Shawn: You know who he is describing? :sas1:

Vince: (annoyed) Yes. :beli:

Shawn tryna break kayfabe and Vince getting annoyed :russ:

It was genius in its inception when you think about his career trajectory. He was champ for like 8 years gets beat by Sheik and replaced by Hogan then discarded and ignored for an entire decade.

He comes back during the "New Generation" and is still largely ignored until he FINALLY gets a title rematch that he eventually loses to the new technically proficient wrestler and that sends the 46 year old spiraling into insanity.

It makes so much sense. Great storytelling until the Diesel move.

I hated this gimmick as a kid :camby:

Appreciate it more as an adult

Same, I Remember Thinking “Who’s This Old 1950’s Wrestler” :hhh:

Dude Was Actually Awesome

Yeah it was definitely a case of "boring has-been face" that the mid 90s weren't messing with anymore when he first came back. He had been gone for like 10 years then came back with the same gimmick, same wrestling style. He was not colorful, not "cool", and not young.

Even when he turned later on, some of the great work he did was overshadowed by still being an old over the hill wrestler. "get off my tv heat". It didn't help his matches were atrocious for that era, but the pure character work in some of his non wrestling segments are absolute gold now.
