John Brown was a white abolitionist who believed that the only way to end slavery was by force
On the night of October 16, 1859 Brown attempted to raid the Federal Armory at Harpers Ferry to obtain the arsenal of weapons stored there. The raid was going well for John Brown and his men until they seized a train and were confronted by one of its bag handlers............a black man named Hayward Sheppard. During the confrontation Hayward Sheppard was shot in the lower back as he attempted to run away. Unfortunatly for Brown, although mortally wounded, Hayward was able to crawl back to the train station and report the revolt before giving up his ghost.
John Brown was later captured and hanged.........
