They've never had a show or movie centered around them.
Sometimes they aren't even mainstays on shows...may have recurring roles

Can you afford a nice lifestyle in California being that "one guy"?

An actor who works steady can have a pretty decent lifestyle. They won't be living like Tom Cruise but they also won't be struggling like a dude who works at UPS either.

Take this dude: John Pyper-Ferguson

You'd never know his name but you probably recognize him from a million TV shows and movies. This guy seems to never be out of work so him not being a lead in a movie or TV show or even a regular character isn't a bad thing because he is constantly getting hired for guest roles, supporting roles or recurring roles.
