I think the average person can easily say 10,000 hours have been dedicated to work. Dedicating that much time to something else outside of a full-time job would be amazing and difficult.

Even the examples Gladwell used in his book weren't accurate. He wrote to become a chess grandmaster took 10,000 hours of play but even at the time of writing I believe there were three grandmasters who had around ~8,000 hours of playing experience.
