Learning about it in a history class I'm taking. I didn't know there were communities of runaway slaves and their descendants that lived so deep in the swamp in North Carolina that they had no outside contact with white people

Maroon is just another word for black Indians who were free. Nat Turner and the Underground Railroad is all connected to Black Indians assisting enslaved Africans and Indians.

This book is a MUST read, not just in regards to the Great Dismal Swamp but maroonage in the US in general.
