The Disappearance of Asha Degree

Case File Overview

On February 14th, 2000 nine-year-old Asha Degree vanished without a trace.

Asha lived at home, 3404 Oakcrest Street, Shelby, North Carolina, with her mother Iquilla, father Harold, and her ten-year-old brother O’Bryant.

Before heading to bed, Asha’s dad checked on her at 2:30 am and found her asleep in her bed. Asha and her brother O’Bryant shared a bedroom. O’Bryant said he heard noises in the early morning hours but assumed it was his sister tossing and turning in bed.

When Iquilla went to wake up her children for school at approximately 6:30 am, Asha was nowhere to be found.

There was no sign of forced entry, and all of the doors were locked.

Two truck drivers reported seeing Asha walking south on North Carolina Highway 18 around a mile from her home between 3:30 am and 4:15 am. The truckers saw Asha leave the roadway and Run Into The Woods And disappear out of sight.

Three days after Asha disappeared her pencil, marker, and Mickey Mouse hair bow were found in a toolshed at Turner’s Upholstery, located along North Carolina Highway 18 close to where the truckers spotted Asha.

In August 2001, a contractor clearing a lot discovered Asha’s bookbag. It was double wrapped in black plastic bags and buried more than 26 miles away from her home. It was sent for tests, but the results have never been made public.

The authorities and Asha’s family searched tirelessly for Asha, but her disappearance remains unsolved.

I heard about this a year or two back on a podcast. The most fukked up part was the drivers who saw a little 9yr old girl walking along the highway and just.....kept it moving. Although I believe there was one person who actually did have enough common sense to know if a child is walking around at 4am, something is wrong, but when they tried to make contact she ran away.

The whole story kind of approaches Dyatlov Pass levels of spooky tbh. She voluntarily left her home with a packed bag for a reason. Who was she meeting? Where was she going? Was she running away from home, got spooked by the driver and snatched up by a stranger? Did someone see her walking and decide to take advantage? I mean wtf..

My mom remembers that story.

I honestly couldn't tell you, I listen to so many I wouldn't even know where to begin. It could've been Last Podcast on the Left, My Favorite Murder, True Crime Garage or something I can't even remember.

Honestly you should probably do a search for something like "asha degree missing podcast". Google will give you lots of good links.

She ran away from home.

I think a child predator caught her up, probably offered her a ride. She starts asking where are you taking me, like the drunk girl who left a voicemail on her brother's phone while she was being driven to her death. Killer takes her to the toolshed. She temporarily escapes. But it's an industrial section. There's no one around.

She wasn't going to make the same mistake twice with the truckers. But her killer saw everything. Followed her into the woods. That was a wrap.

Why the killer doublebagged and buried the bookbag instead of burning is weird. Bodies are buried. Sounds like an intentional throw off. Or maybe her things got into the toolshed after she was killed, like a trophy display.

Anyway, the 45 minute window between which the truckers say they possibly saw her is bullshyt.

Who has the keys to a company toolshed?

Was the contractor affiliated in anyway with the upholstery company?

If they're not releasing info does that mean they already know exactly who did it, but they need concrete proof or they need his cooperation in another case? Or nah?
