I've always been a fan of philosophy–I've read Plato, Descartes, and some Nietzsche–but never knew about Arty until I did a paper on Richard Wagner. Wagner, the infamous anti-Semitic, yet brilliant, German composer of the late 19th century had an epiphany after reading one of Schopenhauer's works and, as a result, wrote one of the most famous operas in modern times: Tristan und Isolde.
What happened was that Schopenhauer was this, well, bitter pessimist. Wagner, who constantly suffered from various illnesses most his life–one of which, Syphilis, cost him his life–was, understandably miserable. This philosophy spoke to him and he began crafting his music in a similar manner.
Anyways, I'm just know getting to read up on Arthur's works. Here's a YouTube video of a reading of his work, On the Sufferings of the World.
