Has anyone in anime suffered as much as Vash the Stampede did in Trigun?

You can't say anyone suffered as much as Vash the Stampede. Dude lost his mentor (REM), lost his organic family on that ship, lost his connection with his brother, lost his arm in a duel with his brother, was unable to save anyone using his nonviolent tactics, lost his best friend in Wolfwood, lost his innocence when he had to kill legato...

I can't think of one character that suffered as much as Vash did during the entire series

He lost the woman he loved, he got sliced up and thrown out of the window of a tall building, got the shyt beat out of him repeatedly by a floating fat man, got shot up and left for dead in Jupiter Jazz (part 2), was nearly killed in the movie (remember the train scene), and finally dies in the final episode. Come to mention it, he took quite a few vicious beatings throughout his life.

You're right, but Spike was paralyzed at one point (ending of Symphony of the Devil), although the series never tells you how long, and one of his eyes is fake. Vash is less human, and thus, can take a lot more than Spike. I rarely got the sense that Vash was close to death the way Spike was throughout his series.

Okay how about everybody on Gantz then? All of them are dead due to circumstances varying from being run over by trains to suicide by slit wrists, just to live an eternal existence as fukking data to some twisted alien kiling machine and they suffer various amounts of pain and dismemberment on every mission besides their own personal problems ranging from feelings of inadequacy to just straight up horrible luck

the anime is done but I guess the manga is still ongoing cuz I only recognize dude on the far right, its dark and depressing with lots of blood and gratuitious violence but between the mission episodes its gets boring as fukk 2 me, they also made a live action movie out of it
