Has anybody heard of lighter people seeking out dark skin mates post civil war?

Any indication that this was true?
Some Lighter complexioned and or biracial men / women deliberately having children with very dark complexioned person to darken their child's skin and make them less white/light looking to distance them selves from fomer slaveholders image? Has anybody else heard about this?

Heard of it too but assumed it was an exaggeration.

Thanks. Yeah I recently saw a photo of my 2x/3x Great grandfather pic( (biracial almost passing man from Louisiana with very dark complexioned wife.

Also on some podcast or YouTube interview maybe even I remember a comedian mentioned this light skin with dark skin mate was a thing.
Not sure how prevalent this would have been.

Not really

I don’t think people back then consciously mated so they could have darker complexion offspring. Could it be that they sub consciously mated with darker people, maybe.

That happened to a small degree back in the day but most lighter skinned types were going to mix with darker types regardless, as long as they weren't on that color struck tip. In more recent times, that type of thinking is probably more common because I noticed most lighter skinned women DO NOT go after light skinned men but instead someone darker than them.

Even in New Orleans, a place that admittedly struggles with colorism today, you see more of the so called “ creole” folk mating with and marrying darker men and women.

I can’t say if there is conscious effort to do this, especially not like some families conscious efforts to maintain a fair skinned lineage.

Happened in my family. The shift started with my grandmas generation and it’s pretty much been that way ever since.
:yeshrug:

IMO if your fam was multigenerational mixed but didn’t find ways to socially isolate themselves via class, culture, etc. then they usually ended up marrying folks who were darker.
