Episode #1

The Hard Path of Rhythm is a content channel and production company created by Wax Poetics cofounder Brian DiGenti and longtime WP writer Mark McCord that produces narrative, episodic music stories, primarily in the form of visual docuseries (on YouTube). We explore the common theme of the difficult road of the artist in an unforgiving industry, and the surrounding pitfalls of life in the music biz.

“The Hip-Hop Shangri-La” is the channel’s inaugural docuseries, based on McCord’s article by the same name originally published in Wax Poetics Issue 1/Vol. 2 in 2021. Its eight episodes tell the story of a mysterious gangster named “Fat Jack” Taylor who created the club Harlem World where the first rap record was born; and the music producer Sylvia Robinson who captured lightning in a bottle and changed the course of popular music history. In Episode One of "The Hip-Hop Shangri-La," we meet one of our main characters, Harlem, New York, whose pimps, hustlers, and clubs influenced Jack

In Episode Three of "The Hip-Hop Shangri-La," we go back in time to witness the roots of Fat Jack Taylor—where he came from and what made him the man he was. And we find out how he got his money to fund his record label, Rojac Records—dealing with Nicky Barnes to pay Big Maybelle.
