the Chip Kelly hire got me thinking. it seems like more times than not both transitions end up being a failure. but at least CFB coaches get a shot, who was the last CBB coach to get a NBA gig. Billy Donavan? does he count?

Basketball is easier to get talent and win games tho. Especially with a good coach

It's tougher because you can't recruit the best players annually if you could in college. It's not about you. It's about the team, the market, the checks. You also have to deal with players differently. In the NBA, the inmates run the asylum. Once the players tune you out, it's over.

I would say the CBB to the NBA is a tougher transition. A lot of coaches cannot coach up to the speed of the game and it's actually harder to coach players with very high talent levels. The coach of an NFL team has less of a gap imo and the plays and schemes in CFB are translating to the NFL due to this new breed of Hybrid QB ala Kaep, Russ and RG3. If you look at teams like Alabama, LSU, USC or even 2nd tier teams like South Carolina and Winsconsin are basically NFL teams, in College ball the best College team would get killed by say the Toronto Raptors.

Easily CFB to NFL>>>>> I still believe that most coaches in the NBA aren't even needed for the most part. IMO its more about talent in the NBA. I see Spo get a ring and I always :childplease: at him.

You could apply everything you just said to the NFL, and its only 16 games instead of 82 to get it together

I'd say the NBA is tougher because players have more power so its more difficult to earn their respect plus from a strategy standpoint it seems easier to bring college football concepts to the NFL with have success.

That's a lot of players you have to tune out in the NFL. Take a look around and see how many of them actually make the leap. They don't because the league is just a different beast.

There are 30 coaches currently in the NBA. Only P.J. Carlesimo and Mike Dunlap were NCAA head coaches in college (and Dunlap was an assistant in college for years before he finally got a shot). Why? Because the leap is much tougher. It's that way for a reason.

CBB to NBA because most of the players make more money than the coach even if their talent isnt as good. Its also a lot harder because if you do not have an elite talent, its difficult to win. And if you do have an elite talent and that guy does not like you, then you are fukked.

Really they both transitions are very challenging, so this is a good question.

CBB to the NBA

Although Ra Ra coaches don't have a long shelf life in the NFL either, A guy like Jim Harbaugh would never make in the NBA.

You have to be able to manage personalities in the NBA just as good you scheme and gameplan. I don't think most CBB coaches can make that transition of falling back and massaging egos.

Not true Jim Harbaugh would be excellent in the NBA, he is ra-ra guy but Harbaugh has the X's and O's experience to back it up. Plus he was a good QB in the NFL. Dude is a lifer in his respective sport and has the pedigree comparable to few.
