Happening Now - Ethiopian Airlines flight bound for Rome hijacked

For unknown reasons, Ethiopian Airlines flight 702 was flying over Sudan when it started squawking 7500. Squawk 7500 is supposed to indicate a “hijacking.”

Ethiopian Airlines flight 702 was operating from Addis Abba to Rome, but it was circling around Geneva Airport (GVA). The aircraft was provided a military escort, and emergency crews were standing by at Geneva Airport.

There were reports that the aircraft did not have a lot of fuel remaining (at 11:45PM EST, the aircraft only had 20 minutes of fuel remaining). Also according to audio on Live ATC, there were unconfirmed reports of an engine potentially flaming out.

Shortly after 12:00AM EST, Ethiopian Airlines flight 702 landed safely on Runway 05L at Geneva.

At 5:00pm Pacific Time, Ethiopian Flight 702, a Boeing 767-300 was flying over Sudan when it started squawking 7500. The transponder code, is supposed to indicate a “hijacking.”

Sometimes, pilots accidentally switch to this code or equipment malfunctions. This however, does not appear to be the case. The aircraft can be tracked live via Flightradar 24.

This was hopefully just an error, but this iwascertainly a deviation from normal flight.

We have reached out to a source who is an aircraft electrical expert and they confirmed that a “7500″ code can’t come from a glitch.

The flight, operating from Addis Abba to Rome has been confirmed by Rome Airport not to have arrived yet. It is currently circling over Geneva Airport (GVA), with a military escort. Emergency crews are standing by a GVA.

• Reports of one engine potentially flaming out (unconfirmed via LiveATC)
• Reports of the aircraft being directed to make an approach but not landing until a response is given regarding the word “asylum” (via LiveATC)
• Fuel warning has been received on the flight deck (Via LiveATC)
• Aircraft apparently cleared for an ILS approach. What could be a hostage negotiator has been heard on the radio (Via LiveATC)
• Response to the request will be given by Swiss Authorities on Short Final for landing on Runway 05 (via LiveATC)
• AIRCRAFT HAS LANDED SAFELY (Via FlightRadar24 and LiveATC)
• Pilots heard on radio stating they will be exiting via the aircraft flight deck window. (via LiveATC)
• Airport/Airspace around Geneva is now closed (via LiveATC)
• Geneva airport hopes to re-open airspace at 7:00am Geneva CET (via LiveATC)
• Unconfirmed reports the aircraft is parked at the end of Runway 05.
• Asylum request still pending. (9:33PST)

Edit: Just read it, either it was an engine malfunction or hijackers. Considering the fact that one of the other Boeing's engines caught fire at Heathrow some months back I might be inclined to think it's some kinda technical difficulties. smh, Boeing lookin out here.

Yeah, but they wouldn't hijack the damn plane. It's easy as fukk to get asylum outside of Ethiopia as long as you land in the right country cuz other nations know that the govt is iffy. I'll say you're kinda overblowing the ethnic tension thing it wasn't things that weren't there already I'm not sayin it hasn't risen or its non-existant but the country isn't on the brink of civil war or some shyt. The increase of ethnic tension is kinda the govt's own doing though by focusing politics on a more tribal slant. Feels like balkanization, it always has imo since the TPLF took over. Nah when OP created the thread, I googled it to make sure it was real. Saw only international outlets reporting it. Wanted to make sure what I was seeing, was actually what I was seeing. So I went to cnn.com and huffpost.com to confirm my suspicions.

Anyways, BBC updated basically one hijacker was arrested and everyone is safe and being diverted to their respective destinations. It'll be interesting to see who the hijacker is, if it's an al Shabab member(doubt it) then it's the second close call we've had with them now after we debacled their struggle plot to bomb the Ethiopia/Nigeria soccer match. It might really just be some crazed fool lookin for asylum.

If you lookin for asylum it couldn't be any easier for people that work for the airlines, my dad got him and my mom to America cuz he was a mechanic for Ethiopian and used his flight perks then claimed asylum in NYC before they moved to OKC, imagine if you're a pilot and got lots of destination you can plot on. AND the Swiss just got strict with immigration.
